If you run early in Accra, you already know the streets belong to more than just you at that hour. Somewhere between the quiet and the first traffic, you'll pass a compound dog patrolling its territory, a pack sleeping near a chop bar that's about to open, or a lone stray working out whether you're a threat or just background noise. Most of these encounters end in nothing at all — the dog barks, you keep moving, that's it. But knowing how to handle the ones that don't end that easily is part of running responsibly in this city, and it's knowledge most runners never actually sit down and learn until they're in the middle of a situation.

Understand what you're actually dealing with

Street dogs in Accra are rarely aggressive by nature. Most of the reactions you'll get are territorial, not predatory — a dog barking or trotting toward you is usually saying this is my space, not I'm about to attack. That distinction matters, because it changes how you should respond. A dog that's guarding territory generally wants you to leave, not to engage. A dog that's genuinely stalking or fixated, ears forward, body low and tense, silent rather than barking, is a different and much rarer situation. Learning to read which one you're looking at is the first real skill here, and it comes with exposure — the more mornings you run these routes, the more you'll recognise which dogs are all noise and which ones actually warrant caution.

Don't run past a dog that's noticed you

This is the instinct that gets runners into trouble. Running triggers a chase response in dogs the same way it does in most predator-prey dynamics — sudden fast movement reads as fleeing, and fleeing invites pursuit even from a dog that had zero interest in you a second earlier. The moment you notice a dog has clocked you and is reacting, the right move is almost always to slow to a walk, not speed up. It feels counterintuitive mid-run, especially if you're mid-pace and locked in, but a walking human moving calmly past is far less interesting to a dog than a running one.

Avoid direct eye contact and a squared-up posture

Dogs read direct, sustained eye contact as a challenge, not a greeting. If you find yourself close to a dog that's reacting, keep your gaze soft and slightly off to the side rather than staring it down, and try to angle your body rather than facing it head-on. Squaring up to a dog, chest and eyes both pointed straight at it, reads as confrontational even if that's not remotely your intention. A relaxed, angled posture signals the opposite — that you're not a threat and you're not looking for one either.

Keep your voice low and your movements slow

If a dog is barking or approaching, resist the urge to shout, wave your arms, or make sudden defensive movements. All three tend to escalate rather than de-escalate, because they read as either aggression or panic, and both provoke a stronger reaction. A firm, low, calm voice — a simple "no" or "go" said flatly rather than shouted — does more than most people expect. Combine it with slow, deliberate movement away from the dog, keeping it in your peripheral vision rather than turning your back completely, and most encounters de-escalate within seconds.

Give territorial dogs a wide, unhurried berth

If you know a stretch of your route has a dog or pack that reliably reacts, the simplest fix is often the least dramatic one: cross to the other side of the road well before you reach them, rather than trying to push through at close range. Distance solves more problems than confidence does. This isn't about avoiding the route altogether — it's about respecting that you're moving through an animal's territory at an hour when it's actively on guard, and giving it space costs you almost nothing in pace or distance.

Carry something between you and the dog if it escalates

In the rare case a dog closes distance aggressively despite slowing and giving space, having something to put between yourself and the animal — a water bottle, a jacket tied at your waist, even your arm angled across your body — can be enough to interrupt the interaction without you needing to make contact with the dog at all. The goal isn't to fight it off; it's to create a visual and physical barrier that breaks its focus long enough for you to back away toward people, light, or a compound gate.

Know when to just stop and stand still

If a dog is genuinely closing in and none of the above has worked, stopping completely and standing still, arms down, no eye contact, is usually more effective than continuing to move in any direction. Movement is what keeps a dog engaged. A stationary, unbothered-looking human is a far less interesting target, and most dogs will lose interest and disengage within a short window if you simply hold your ground calmly rather than turning it into a standoff.

Report bites and unusual behaviour properly

If you're ever bitten or scratched, treat it as a medical situation immediately, not something to shrug off mid-run. Clean the wound as soon as you can and get to a clinic the same day for proper assessment, including whether rabies post-exposure treatment is needed — Ghana still has rabies circulating in stray populations, and this isn't a risk worth guessing about. It's also worth flagging genuinely unusual behaviour in a stray, such as visible aggression with no clear trigger, disorientation, or foaming, to local authorities or a vet clinic, since that kind of behaviour is rare and worth having someone qualified take a look.

Running early doesn't mean running unaware

None of this is a reason to change your route or your wake-up time. Early morning is still the best hour this city gives you, and the overwhelming majority of dogs you pass before sunrise want nothing to do with you either way. This is simply about running with enough awareness that the rare encounter doesn't catch you off guard — because the runners who handle these moments best aren't the ones who avoid the streets, they're the ones who understand them.
